
Launching Space Dinosaurs: Evolving Retail, One Brand at a Time
After over a decade of building hundreds of high-performing sites for leading retailers and leading Edgio’s digital practice, our team spun off in January of this year to carry that same mission forward under a new name: Solara6.
The first few months were spent landing the ship operationally. Getting systems, contracts, accounting, and delivery processes in order under the new entity was necessary to ensure continuity for our employees and customers. Before we could truly think about what Solara6 looked like as a brand, we had to make sure it could operate smoothly without any disruption to our employees and customers.
With the first few months under our belt, we finally had time to ask the real question - was our identity a good representation of who we were and where we wanted to go?
The name had come together quickly as we were standing up the new company in December of last year. It sounded modern, a little techy, and had a domain available - which, at the time, felt like a win. But in the months that followed, it became clear that “Solara6” was a bit generic and occasionally confusing, as evidenced by the occasional spam emails we would get from firms that pitched us “deep experience working with solar companies” when reaching out. I even had one insist we were on a list of “emerging clean-tech innovators.” Not quite what we were going for.
The Case for Evolution
Over the past several years, our work has taken us deeper into retail than ever before.
We’ve helped some of the biggest retail brands in the world reimagine their digital experiences - from composable architectures and performance optimization to AI-driven personalization and conversion growth. Retail is where our DNA truly shines: high stakes, fast execution, measurable impact.
And yet, Solara6 didn’t quite capture that world. It sounded more like a satellite launch company than a performance-obsessed retail partner. We wanted something that carried our technical credibility but also reflected the creative, kinetic energy that defines retail. Something with personality, and maybe even a bit of mischief.
That’s when we turned to Ryan Urban, one of our most trusted partners and advisors.
Ryan’s company, Queen One, is a brand technology platform bringing life, energy, and guaranteed revenue to websites and communications. We’ve been proud to partner with the Queen One team on their massive vision for commerce - so when it came time to rethink our brand, Ryan was the first person we called.
“What About Space Dinosaurs?”
One night, Ryan texted me two words: “Space Dinosaurs.” Attached was an AI rendering of a dinosaur in orbit, followed by a three-minute voice message pitching me on why it was the perfect name for us.
At first, I laughed. Then I paused. And then I tested it with a few trusted partners and customers. The reaction was almost universally positive.
It was bold, unexpected - and it told our story.
We’d just survived our own extinction-level event, the Edgio bankruptcy, and came out stronger. The metaphor hit home immediately: we are the creatures that survived the meteorite and made it to space.
The more we thought about it, the more it fit. Dinosaurs were the most powerful creatures to ever roam the Earth. That’s how we feel about our engineering capability: unmatched power, discipline, and scale. Sure, dinosaurs in tech can imply something outdated. But Space Dinosaurs? Those have evolved. They’ve adapted. They’ve strapped on rockets and refused to go extinct. And the vastness of space? No boundaries - just infinite possibility. Exactly how we see our business. Retail itself is a perfect parallel: it’s been operating on the same basic model for over a decade, but the brands that thrive in this fast-evolving world won’t be those that stay grounded - they’ll be the ones that embrace innovation and move into the next era.
What a Name Really Means
Choosing a name like Space Dinosaurs makes a statement. It says we’re not afraid to have fun in an industry that often takes itself too seriously. It says creativity and performance can coexist. And it says survival isn’t the goal - it’s the starting point for evolution.
